MARCH PROGRAM: Chief Lawrence J. Leon, Palm Beach County School District Police
Bio: Chief Lawrence J. Leon was appointed Chief of the Palm Beach County School District Police in 2012; one of Chief Leon’s goals was to be Chief of the Palm Beach School District Police Department. The Palm Beach School District Police Department was established by a Senate Legislative Act in 1981 with Senate bill 81-464, the school police department was also the first School District Police Department to be accredited through the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation in 2003 and is currently working on the fifth re-accreditation. His department is responsible for the safety and security of approximately 190,000 children, 27,000 employees, and over 185 facilities.
Chief Leon started his law enforcement career in 1981 as a part-time officer with the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission. In 1985, he went to work for the Miccosukee Police Department, then in 1986 Chief Leon lateraled into the North Miami Beach Police Department where he worked road patrol until 1991. In 1991, Chief Leon joined the Palm Beach School District Police Department and worked in all school levels, and worked his way up to a Lieutenant. In 2005 Chief Leon become the Director of Safety and Security/Chief of School Police for the Sarasota School District until 2012.
Chief Leon has a Master’s in Business Administration from Webster University in 2008 and holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Florida International University. He has also graduated from the 39th Chief Executive Seminar. Chief Leon has had extensive training dealing with critical incidents such as Active Shooters scenarios and training in emergency operations and crisis response. Chief Leon also has the distinction of being a Commissioner for the Commission of Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Practitioner for Crime Prevention through Environmental Design, Past Chair for the Law Enforcement Planning Council, and the Past President for the Palm Beach County Chiefs of Police Association.
